His leave of absence was to complete an MBA as well as be a case worker for the State of Missouri. Please remove his name, this is truly sad that his name would be on this list, especially with no background information as to why.

Comments: I am a 42 year old woman who worked at our Methodist church as the Director of Children, Youth, and Families. I worked for the church for 7 years. I confessed to what I thought was an "affair" with our Lead Pastor on May 7, 2015. Thankfully my husband of 18 years, heard the Holy Spirit tell him there was more to my story and forgiveness and grace washed over him. He started researching and found information that clearly described my situation, Clergy Sexual Abuse. I later found a research study by a Baylor University professor called, When Wolves Wear Shepherds Clothes, which described my last year. As all other information describes, my family and I have been exiled from our church of over 20 years, it has been suggested that it would be better for my restoration to leave my position, and to top it all off... the lead pastor committed suicide on May 22. The depth of my pain greater than I could imagine. I am blessed to have a loving and supportive husband who God is using in extraordinary ways. Thank you for this website, it is a comfort to know I am not alone.

It wound be impossible for me to die on the cross for the crimes I'm aware of.. So thanks be to GOD there is a plan. I have only recently begun to reemerge on discussion boards to discuss clergy abuse, and am in the middle of writing a (long-overdue) book besides. I've also revived a private online support group for women abused by priests after two female victims of priests were referred to me. I just set the group up and want to an extend an invitation to those who'd like to join. This is exclusively for female victims and by invitation, only, in that I would have to send anyone an invitation for them to gain access. If you're interested, please write to me c/o the email address that's with this message. Thank you.

He was the one with the authority, he knew what he was doing was wrong and he did it anyway, I hope your state is a state that prosecutes clergy that take advantage of those they are suppose to be serving! It took me more than six years to get out of this relationship and when I finally did, I worked to so hard to "take responsibility" for my own actions--and everybody let me! Nobody told me it was his fault. I was 24 and he was 29. I always thought it was my fault and it was consensual. It touches a deep part of my heart to have somebody tell me it was really abuse. Its hard to hear that and really believe it. Thank you for all your work.

Comments: i am the victim in one of the stories you have about adult abuse. the abuse began 6 years ago and ended 4 years ago. i have been in weekly plus therapy for 3 1/2 years with a great therapist who works with these sick priests. she is my only safe place. my family and i have suffered beyond words from loss of family, friends, jobs, once our lawsuit was filed in april 2008. we have been judged over and over. called names, mental stability questioned and endless hurtful words and actions toward us. we have grabbed our children and those who love us despite our failings and stuck together through this nightmare. and it is horrible and feels like it will never end. our case is still in the court system although the diocese has spent over 2 years offering pathetic settlements. the pain and the guilt never leave. i hear what people say and know my role, but it so very horrible they and this priest cannot accept their responsibility. they would like the world to believe i did all of this. which is impossible. the pain never ends for us.

Many, many people email me privately about him but are not brave enough to write their true feelings on my website. Thank you for your kind words, it means the world to me to have support from fellow Catholics. The only thing I can say to you is what I have said to the parishioners from his parish in Hutchinson is to contact Msgr. Hemberger or Bishop Jackels and ask that Voelker be removed and also stop tithing, give your money to other needy causes, God will not look down on you for that. I am sorry to hear of your own experience with a psychopath; whether it is a priest, doctor, teacher, or 'boyfriend', they can do major damage to the people they prey upon. Comments: I found your site from a link posted on topix.com. Your story brought me to tears because I am also a member of SEAS and it hit close to home. I've never been abused by a priest but I certainly know it happens. Fr. Nick is a psychopath! And i'd like to tell him thhat he's not even good looking! Seriously, what a nut. And then it hit me that it occurred a few years ago and our kids are probably around the same age. And then it hit me like a ton of bricks--MADDI WARREN. Your Maddi and my Maddy are friends and that brings it even closer to home. I was in a relationship with a narcissistic psychopath for 8 months and it had taken about 8 months to get myself back to normal. He of course didnt have the added power of being my priest! I'm glad you have this website and I hope you continue to help people. Please don't let him destroy your faith in God.

Comments: Hi All, I have been 'blogging' on a website started by Anne Rice, the author of books many of you are probably familiar with. What you may not know is she is also a devout Catholic, who is currently advocating for reform in the Church -- particularly given the current revelations about Benedict XVI and the pedophile priests he covered for while an archbishop. An America priest in Massachusetts named Fr. Scahill is calling for the Pope's resignation in light of these disclosures. Followin from: From Anne Rice: st-michael@comcast.net The above is the email of St. Michael's Church in Massachusetts where Fr. James Scahill spoke up for the victims and demanding honesty from the Vatican. Anyone who wants to support Fr. James Scahill in his bold and honest move against the Vatican's duplicity can email that address. I have already done so. A CNN story today said that emails are being received and only 2 have been negative. But if we don't support this priest, the defensive Catholics might yet overwhelm him or try to.

Comments: To Peggy in ND. I wish I could say, "You have got to be kidding?" but nothing these guys do surprises me anymore ... Your post also caught my attention because of the reference to "sex addiction." The Jesuit who abused me - yup, he's still a priest - also turned out to be a sex addict who is supposed to be going to Sex Addicts Anonymous meetings for the rest of his life. I strongly doubt that he is, though he was in therapy long enough the therapists made him tell me what his "problem" is. Naturally, the priests would prefer that none of us go to the press? But when have you ever heard of the Church being fully open regarding the real number of sex offenders serving in the priesthood? To Peggy W in KC: wondering how the new job is going? Also wondering if you got my note referring E. Davie to you as possible interview subject for your show? Otherwise, I figure you have more than enough to keep you busy! I don't know how you manage it all with work, kids, this website, tv show, et al.

Comments: First, Hi Donald, Alexandria and Lillian and to everyone else that has signed since I was last on. The older the kids get the busier we seem to get but it is a good busy. Welcome Peggy in N.D., I find it fascinating that the powers that be continue to promote the abuser - whether it be to Abbott, pastor, bishop, cardinal, or Pope. In any other organization that action would be ludicrious (then again in any other organization raping children is ludicrious) but the way I see it is the men with secrets to hide will be the ones that keep the secrets. So it only makes sense to promote the abuser since the Catholic Church is built on secrets of evil at the expense of lay people. Like with any company, the higher the employee moves up the ladder the more the employee will learn about company operations. Same goes for the 'employee' priest, as the 'man of God' moves up the Catholic Church ladder, more secrets will be revealed and he has no choice but to keep those secrets so that his secrets may stay hidden also. Do you still have the letter from the former abbott? Would you like to post your story on this website so that others might know his name and be warned? Take care of yourself and I appreciate you wanting to communicate on the website so that others might get something out of our communications. Peace, Peggy

Yes my abuser is now Abbot of Blue Cloud Abbey,Marvin,SD at the time he was just plain, father.he resigned once abuse came to the front and then again was elected-Jan.09-this guy is also a sex addict. after knowledge of his addiction he became vocation director and teacher of new candidates, then moved on to prior of the abbey-2nd in command.the count at the abbey is 15 w/3 in Guatelmala.now they are renting the abbey out for weddings and receptions(good pickings for him)this guy was my spiritual director. the diocese did acknowledge he did abuse me .checked into it and thanked me for contacting them and for making the diocese safer.took them 3 months to look at that.never talked to the vicar or anyone in the diocese only the pastor I went to here.that's all that became of it.the former abbot of same abbey-sent me aletter-nov.08- that I was only supposed to talk about any of this in confessional and not to the media. It would ruin this guys reputation-since there is only the 12 members at the abbey.further more he asked me if this guy F.Denis should be elected. how dumb because I would say No-I sent no reply. that was the day b4 thanksgiving of 08.have had no communication since.

Comments: Hi Mabel, I am so sorry to learn of the abuse you suffered as a child. While I have posted suggestions for how to deal with this from a legal standpoint, the first priority is to find a therapist who can help you work through the unresolved feelings and issues related to the trauma. Having the support of others who've suffered through having been abused as children, along with having compensation for the trauma are fine, but the real work of becoming well recovered is up to the individual, in partnership with a trustworthy therapist. I wish you all the very best with your recovery journey and know that others who post to this guest book will have their own suggestions regarding what worked for them.

Comments: Many settlements for victims of clergy or religious abuse are accomplished out-of-court, as the churches typically want to avoid the "scandal" of a public trial. One cautionary note should be added here: There is NOTHING that says settlement terms must include a "non-disclosure" clause. I am here to state that any settlement agreement can be changed to eliminate the non-disclosure aspect of the agreement. It is not a legal requirement that anyone sign away their ability to talk about their experience of abuse, in order to receive compensation for the abuse. Though church leaders and their lawyers would have victims believe otherwise, victims who ask the non-disclosure aspect be removed, can do so. Also, any agreements that claim to impose confidentiality or hold-harmless terms on the family of a victim are invalid. A victim cannot sign away their family's rights, even though church attorneys have been known to add clauses to agreements that purport to extend to the victim's family and heirs. The church attorneys will tell you this is "standard wording" and that's only because most people don't challenge the settlement agreements.

Comments: Bonny, I am so sorry for all you have been through. Alexandria, good advice - you are right, states are moving to towards changing legislation regarding childhood sexual abuse. I also want to point out that just because a victim/survivor contacts an attorney doesn't mean you are going to sue or that you are even ready to sue. Attorneys can make headway for their clients without having to go through a lawsuit.

Comments: If "they" acknowledge victims then they acknowledge their own potential to be vulnerable. The Catholics who've actually reached out to me and have been supportive are people who are both very secure in their sense of self and they are not irrational or superstitious. Insecure Catholics do not have a fully developed or well-grounded sense of their faith, much less Christianity. People who believe in dogma and tradition, rather than truth, are coming from a place of fear. They are to be pitied, for they feel - rather than think about - their opinions. Or how irrational is it, really, to continue to trust known predators, as leaders, in preference to believing their victims? Think Stockholm Syndrome. Think Jones Town Massacre. The blind-sided supporters of Voelker and all other predatory priests really aren't all that different.

Comments: One of the most difficult aspects of my recovery journey was that when I (and other survivors who have gone before and will come after me) wanted to heal our division with the Roman Catholic Church by asking for meetings or trying to find resolutions, we were ignored. Literally, the only time we actively hear from a Roman Catholic lay or religious person on this list is when they write in to insult Peggy or put survivors down. The only sound received in the silence, is full of hatred. Imagine trying to heal through that. Return to Mass? Catholics, you simply do not understand the depth and chasm of your silence on our hearts and in our spiritual lives. The abuse and silence has destroyed more lives than my own. Some people have died from it. Imagine, coming from a church that claims to LOVE? Love doesn't mean ignoring those you have hurt. LISTEN!

Comments: I wanted to add something else. Silence and keeping evil circumstances and people, secret, has much more insidious effects, apart from protecting evil individuals. These circumstances leave other people with a false sense of security and safety, because they are living in an illusion of reality. The same people who will picket abortion clinics and steer clear of pornographic publications and movies will become blind-sided apologists and defenders of priests who are users and customers of these businesses. Why is that? It is no less wrong when a priest uses tithes to pay for a woman he impregnated, to have an abortion or uses the money to pay for a prostitute's services. But we are told we should forgive them their human weakness and frailty and condemn the victims who expose the priests' hypocritical behavior. This is fundamentally wrong. The priests should be held to the same standards they demand of their parishioners or step down.

Comments: Hi Lillian, It has been particularly interesting, as well as disturbing, for me as a non-Catholic survivor of Catholic clergy abuse, to note how the entire concept of confessional confidentiality has been warped in the Church. Silence has been mislabled a virtue, even when it covers for appalling evils. i have also noticed that many Catholic victim-survivors -- and Peggy is an amazing exception! -- fall back on the worst of their Catholic inculturation when coming to terms with abuses committed against them, by priests. They organize groups that function as super-secret confessionals and their recovery remains as mysterious and silent, as the covert circumstances under which their abuse occurred. I believe that recovery from secret abuses, should not be conducted in secret, or the victim never becomes fully-healed. Silent recovery enables the perpetrator priests; the priests go on to abuse others when their victims engage in a recovery program that disallows identification of their abuser at the public level. When I was offered a monetary settlement by the Jesuit Provincial who was Fred superior, I refused to sign the settlement terms until he removed the non-disclosure clauses and the ridiculous hold-harmless clause that was to, theoretically extend to my heirs. (It is, in fact, legally unenforcable, but that's beside the point) As I told the Provincial, my experience of Fred (I refuse to call him Father) represented one fourth of my life, at the point he exited my life. Why should I sign away my right to openly talk about 10 years of my life? I also told this superior that Fred's needs are no more important than mine, before God, even if he does have a Ph.D. and Society of Jesus acronym he can add, after his name. Victims are people who suffer in silence. Survivors are people who take back their lives on their terms.

I do not trust the Catholic church because of their long standing choice to be silent. Silence is faith turned inside out, the night to day. Silence is darkness to light. Silence IS faith turned inside out. Sound is light to darkness. Talking sets us free. The first night of 12 step worked for me. I will not give the RC Church free rent in my head. My children need me. I will continue to speak up and out against how they have handled this. Sound is daylight to darkness. Sound is faith reborn. The silent treatment was wrong. Very wrong.

Comments: Hi Lillian, There WAS a clergy abuse survivor program that used the 12 Steps as part of their recovery program, until a new president of the organization decided the Steps were not needed. And one of the advisors to that group also convinced the president to minimize emphasis on support for adult victims-survivors. The advisor was a priest, which in turn led me to believe he was assigned to undermine the group's original premise and emphasis. But it went further than that. The group disbanded and no longer exists. Lesson learned from that: if anyone seeks to start a group for clergy abuse survivors, using 12 Step principles, that also addresses adult victim issues, make darned sure still-active priests aren't on the board of advisors or given access to survivor discussion boards, where they can create disruption and divisiveness. That said, I admire the fact Peggy leaves critics' posts on this guestbook and responds to them with kindness. There is a Biblical passage that says, "Do kindness unto those who do evil unto you, for it is like heaping hot coals upon their head." Amen. Even so, I long ago recommended to Peggy, offline, that she steer clear of any still-active religious who volunteer to "help" her with this website and her organization, because chances are very good that they really don't have her or other survivors' best interests at heart. They are only interested in discrediting survivors and doing "damage control" on behalf of the church and priesthood.

Comments: Hi Lillian, All, I still find I have to work on the residual anger aspect of recovery. But I am fortunate in having many fine examples of how to handle that, including Peggy, and my late sister in law, who never said an unkind word about anyone. But you are correct in noting that many victims of priests manifest more Christ-like behaviors than the men who abused them. The French have a saying that roughly translates as, "To know all is to forgive everything." With that in mind, and when I remember to do so, I ask myself what happened in the lives of critics of clergy abuse victims, that causes them to be, sometimes, so cold and mean-spirited toward victims? Don't you sometimes wonder if some of these people are victims as well? In fact, I know this to be true in some cases. But instead of identifying with other victim-survivors, they come to identify with their abuser or they blame themselves and feel too shamed to come forward. Criticizing us is a way of distancing themselves from an inevitable confrontation with their own abuse.

We survivors work through our anger and find that we replace it with sadness as we truly become survivors. The only anger here comes from apologists who defend wrongdoing. The voice to change is not an angry one. It is courageous and without shame!

Comments: Referencing Dr. Mic's post, I would like to see your (Peggy's) show feature an episode on abuses committed by military chaplains. When I was in the Air Force one of my roommates was a young woman who shocked me by showing me a book of love poetry that had been written by a Catholic chaplain, who also wrote a personal dedication in her copy. She also showed me pictures of them on vacation, together. As naiive as I was at the time, I was stunned. First of all, I knew Catholic priests took vows of celibacy and chastity (even though I was not and am not, Catholic). Secondly, military protocol forbids dating relationships between officers and non-commissioned personnel. She was an enlistee, he was a captain. Third, he was at least 25 and 30 years older than her. I was only 19, yet I knew there was something very wrong with this "affair" even though I didn't know how to explain it in terms of "power imbalances" and "sexual exploitation." I only knew this priest was inappropriately using my roommate, despite her protests that she was a consenting participant. I was relieved when I learned that she eventually married another, age-appropriate, "regular guy." The priest was serving at an Air Force bas in Missippi. I neither recall his name or the base's location. I only recall that he had a book of his love poems published. In the years since then, I have often wondered what happened to my former roommate. Did she ever comme to the awareness that her affair was really abuse? If she did, I hope she reported him, because given what I know now about this subject, I am quite certain that she was neither his first victim or his last.

First, I moved back to my home state, then I plunged into work as fulltime caretake for my mother who has Alzheimers, and part way through that sustained a nasty fall that resulted in a fractured tibia and torn ligaments. I'm still wearing a knee brace. Today, a woman victim (adult) of a priest reached out to me via email and that, in turn, caused me to log in here. I recommended this website, along with the books, The Betrayal Bond and Sex in the Forbidden Zone, along with having told her she is welcome to contact me and 'talk' all she needs. Then I get in here and see that an alleged sibling of Voelker's has posted smut directed at Peggy and to this site. I have only one thing to add: If this is this sibling's idea of a good way to defend their brother the priest, he has merely succeeded in proving Peggy's abuse accusations are probably valid. Or what right-thinking and pious brother of a priest could possibly think that invoking four-letter words, in defense of the priest is going to reflect well on the character and reputation of either? Get a clue! This doesn't make Voelker or his family look good or holy. You're only making yourself look bad, and your brother the priest look guilty as ...

Comments: Hi Peggy, We breathe because we live. When we speak out, we continue healing and continue to emerge victorious from the trauma. Because we loved our Roman Catholic faith, losing faith in the church hurts even deeper. Comments such as "go back to Mass" don't fix it. My friend and my husband are both suggesting I read "People of the Lie" by M. Scott Peck. My friend, who sells books at our local mall, also recommended I read a book called Toxic Faith. SOS is a critical emergency. When someone is drowning, SOS is an urgent call for rescue. To me, SOS means Sound over Silence. Silence is a disease that has infiltrated the church. Anything that lives, makes sound. Bad Silence is inconsistent with a living response of faith There are times when we are quiet and resting, but not at the expense of hurting survivors. They won't speak to survivors. Survivors have Veritas. That is truth. We spoke up with the truth. Truth is at the heart of faith and truth has sound and truth is victorious and overcomes. Peggy, embrace your Veritas and those who recognize it within you and joyfully acknowledge you with faithfilled sound! SOS :o)

Comments: Lillian, After my press conference two siblings contacted me and question my speaking out. Their questioning really bothered me and I spoke to my therapist. She reminded me that if they didn't care they wouldn't have taken the time to question. She was right. Those that questioned me, through time and discussions, have come to understand the situation. But all of my 'Christian' 'friends' at my former parish and my 'Christian' siblings and in-laws who turn from me and walk the other way when they see me in the grocery store or when they get up and move when I sit next to them at family gatherings - those are the ones that don't care. The ones who shun you and give you the silent treatment are truly the ones that you MUST distance yourself from. They are living in darkness. You are now in the light and there you must stay by ridding yourself of negative people and those that choose to continue living in the darkness even though the light is shining right in their face. They choose to leave their rose-colored glasses on and continue living in their blind faith. Blessed be light and sound! SOS!

Comments: Welcome back Peggy, to this website that shares not only your pain, but the pain of many survivors. I note silence after I wrote my last post. I hit the nail on the head didn't I. My thoughts and prayers go back to another nail. The one they drove into the nail of Jesus' hand. Except the victim is the one hanging on the cross now. Jesus came for all this and the church doesn't get it. The Roman Catholic Church will never get it as long as silence and anger form their response to the pain of survivors. When I was 19, I discerned for religious life. I was accepted, but I didn't enter. I am very glad that I did not. Because I would have been one religious who would not have stayed silent, who would not have ignored the hurting. When I was in college, one of the students there was violated. She was off campus the next day. The nuns got rid of her. Excuse me, but the last time I checked, human beings were not trash you could dispose of. Change your heart, Roman Catholic Church. Veritas, change your heart. Totus Tuo Ego Sum. † Peggy, I'm praying for you. I am glad you put the website back up. Keep up in courageous SOUND.

Comments: Something to share with Catholics reading this. We, survivors, were once devout Catholics. We remember. When you sing "Here I am Lord" or "Awesome God" you rejoice, your heart filled with joy for Him, and although you do not want to admit it, contempt for survivors because you simply do not understand. Those very hymns bring different tears to our eyes. They are tears of pain, of alienation, of octracization. We can't sing them. We can't walk through your doors. When you post here in a derogatory manner against survivors, the distance grows larger. Those of you who have defended those religious who crossed boundaries, state that you believe in forgiveness. I don't understand why you did not give one iota of your energy to the people those religious hurt - the survivors. They are the ones that truly deserved to be heard, so they could sing again. Until the day silence is broken and accountability happens, your hymns will bring us pain.
