Comments: Drew, I agree it seems a bit like the church is picking 'itself' apart these days. However, I don't so much mind the protestors as pictured with this current post. Don't get me wrong; 9 times out of 10 gatherings like the one picture do more harm than good. And I would never participate in one. Let's face it though, groups like this do a good enough job destroying their own credibility without anyone having to say anything. But, at least they are not making money by making the church look bad. I think you will remember a certain professor in Bible College that everyone felt continuously dissed the church. Nobody liked it and it was annoying. Don't get me wrong though, I did enjoy his classes but he seemed to rant often. I feel like most of the people you, me and our friends are reading and praising these days...make a living selling books that pick the church apart! These guys are influencing young church leaders everywhere and its annoying. It seems to me, that the mindset of these authors is no different than the protestors. The only difference is the platform and the money. Also, the authors make more little disciples who go and sell the same line of garbage further picking apart the church. The protestors probably don’t disciple well!

Comments: Very good blog Drew, and for some reason I'm reminded of a sermon you did last year or so during the 1st Mythbusters series about how "Not everything happens for a reason"...I think it teaches us that we need to trust God and know that what hurts us pains HIM as well...great message.

Comments: For whoever is interested in a spellchecker option, I do not believe there is one available through our current web-server or else the powers-at-be would have activated that resource; I am sure. Spell-checkers are available through many of the web browsers now. I believe the new version of Firefox even has one built into it. Or you can add the "Google" tool bar to either Firefox or Windows Explorer, it is a very fast and simple download, just Google search for whichever option sounds more appealing and download away. Also, thanks Drew for all your thought and for taking the time to write them down and share them with us. Even if it isn’t said much, we do appreciate them.

Comments: Will I ever get a response to any of my posts here? Or am I just writing to display that I have read your blog entry? I agree wholeheartedly with this one. Too much time is spent trying to point out where others are going wrong and mostly just by being different in their way of thinking or way of worshiping God. Our job is to tell people about Christ and His desire to love them. That sounds very simplistic, maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Its what we are called for.. Call, Connect, and Cultivate!

It was sort of like reading a trade manual or sports digest.(I'm guessing at the sports digest thing since I don't and won't read it) I had to force my way through reading this blog entry as well. I guess it just goes to show that you can't please all the people all the time. I do appreciate you Drew, just know when you delve deeply into sports metaphors/parables you're going to lose me since I don't get it any more than I can read a technical manual for any electronics and get it. My 2 cents worth. With the love of Christ God bless,Roy aka Mudd

Comments: AHHHH C.S, Lewis. He fell away from Christianity for about 19 years of his life. He was influenced by Tolkien to return. It is sad when we find quotes that are just a small part of a document, and anyone who extracts small statements from his works, really don't understand his messages. That is just like how our God does not want us to take his word in bits and pieces to our own means. See Drew, we listen.

Comments: Bman - Here's a link to the entire paper/speech from C.S. Lewis. In my mind, what he's attempting to get at is entirely different than what I am. With that said, though, the quote, in and of itself, is still incorrect. Anyway, decide for yourself - it's on page seven of the section on 'Christians and Literature.' http://books.google.com/books?id=e19zlwlOVwUC&printsec=frontcover&dq=c.s.+lewis+christian+reflections&source=bl&ots=IBfcBwj47d&sig=PW_N4wUYCPpyz3X90R9f8JEmrRs&hl=en&ei=lXh0S7qTIZCYtgfUm6C2Cg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CBYQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=&f=false

Comments: Drew, What is the context of C.S. Lewis' quote, do you know? I find it hard to believe that a creative fellow such as himself would be calling for its death. I agree with your criticism of the quote. I just didn't interpret his words as being a direct attack on individualism. an old friend

Comments: I would like to confess that I have, on occassion, graced the doors of Ashland Christian Church in my house shoes....because, ya know...some sunday's my feet are cold and some sunday's I'm lazy and in my opinion...God has seen me through the darkest and worst times of my life, the times when I didn't think I needed him and the times that I thought I was fine on my own...and if he can love me despite all that, then he probably won't even blink an eye at the house shoes!! We need to remember that EVERYONE of us is fighting some sort of battle and no matter what we look like when we enter the Church the fact of the matter is that we are all there because our battle requires something more than this world can offer and we are there to turn it over to God, praise him for our blessing that we have already received and the eternal life that we are promised. In God's eye's we are all his children...no matter how worn the house shoes!!!

Comments: Great response Drew! When I read the comments about yesterday's blog, I was getting angry that someone could be so superficial as to comment (or even notice) someone's clothing. I think everyone should be welcome at ACC regardless of their clothing. But then I read your blog from today, and realized I shouldn't be angry at the person who made the comment either. Thanks for putting everything into perspective! But just for the record, I think it's important to always be aware of how our behavior/words might effect others--sometimes it's best to not voice our opinions when it comes to other people's appearance(if for no other reason, because it's rude).

Comments: There are two sides to every story. I wouldn't jump to conclusions based on an anonymous comment. Whoever left the comment logically did not want to give the other side to the story. I will give our church the confidence that it h has earned and deserves that if this story was put in its CONTEXT that no one would have the right to be upset. Let's not jump to conclusions and automatically think the worst. Come one guys and gals, these are people we know and love. I can't imagine anyone saying that to someone else unless there was a reason that the request was made; and then I would even go so far to imagine that the reason that request was made was also explained to the person. It appears that whoever left this remark would rather complain in an open form making the entire church look bad instead of going to who they had the conversation with and discussing it with them.

On the other hand I don't expect us to be perfect but I do hope we are sensitive to each others feelings. I will apologize for us just in case and ask for our forgiveness. I personally don't care what anyone wears to church, I just want to see your face as we worship collectively. God bless, Roy W.

I would like to add that if someone's feelings were hurt about a comment on a person's clothing, that comment reflects one person's opinion. ACC doesn't have a dress code, even if one or more people feel like we should.

Comments: great blog Drew. on the caring about other people we should realize this also includes other peoples feelings, everyone has feelings and they can be hurt by what some may think a small item. short time in the past it was heard in church that someones manner of dress was not up to ACC church standards. We all need to realize that maybe a person doesn't dress as good as we feel they should but maybe that is the best this person as. I don't think that GOD cares what a person is clothed in on the outside but instead his concern is the soul of that person. That person came to worship GOD with us not thinking that our church had a dress code in which case most of the people better start watching how they dress or maybe care about their souls instead of how someone is dressed.

Comments: This blog was fantastic! I do want to say that there were more than just two cheaters, there were actually quite a few, the stroller mom was just the most frustrating. There parents with their kids who where line-crossing and the kids were trying to not line-cross. But the parents kept telling them it was okay - that was heartwarming - not really, in fact I kind of want to vomit just thinking about it. Remember that blog a few months back about parents teaching their kids to cheat? Oh and a large percentage of cheaters were awarded metals... super. Drew and Dave - you should have stretched after... still boys, maybe next time you'll listen...probably not. Oh and I really enjoyed the onion soup blog as well!

Comments: Ok Drew, how old was the "middle-aged" woman pushing two preschoolers in a stroller? You see, I'm guessing if she's the mother of the preschoolers, she's not really middle-aged--At least not by my definition. I'm going to assume it must have been their grandmother. :)

Comments: Drew, onions and churches may be the best Blog I have read! So simple but so true. I love it! Seeing the big picture is not always easy for any of us-old, young, seasoned, immature, or otherwise. It is so much easier for people to think of and focus on their immediate wants and needs and this is the problem. I believe we must follow Christs example here. He never thought short term for us and we should strive to return the favor for each other. Thanks for the insight. :)

Comments: I really like the blog about worship. I think it is very reassuring, personally, as it probably is for others also, that just because someone is not a completely regular church or Bible study attendee does not mean that they are not worshipping God. Whether it is for work, family, or really no good reason at all, a person can still learn about God on their own time. That’s what He is there for, so we are never alone. This means we can grow in Him wherever we are. I’m not saying ‘we don’t need church’ or anything like that. Church is the best place to learn, and a place to go for support. I am simply saying that it might be almost impossible for everyone to attend church all the time, and despite what tradition might tell us, it is probably okay that someone isn’t an AVID church go-er. The important thing is that they are devoted worshippers of God.

Comments: My thought on the matter would be that the argument can be right all day long, but the setting can still be wrong. I would have to agree that this is silly and maybe all of us have a little argue bug :-). The point is; this debate really isn't about right and wrong at all. It's all perception and who in their right mind is going to argue perception? That's like arguing with Bill O'Reilly on opinions! LOL

Comments: Personally I think it depends on the time and place of when you choose to argue. If you chose to do so during Bible Study or Sunday Cultivation Classes I think you have chosen the wrong setting as it is taking away from the time others could be learning. On top of that, others may not realize that you are arguing just because you like to argue and it makes the setting incredibly uncomfortable for the others in the room. Aside from it being “wrong” one needs to take into consideration how it will affect the others who may not be participating.

Comments: So, I might like to argue a little too... I understand how its wrong, because obviously you don't want to be prideful, shoot down others... etc. BUT, if you like to argue and I like to argue, would a situation of us arguing over something still be wrong?? Even if ie doesn't lead to a quarrel? It's like high school debate teams without the formality. I also understand this might be the silliest question ever. :)

Comments: Man.... and sometimes it is fun to argue. Well beside the point. And it is also fun to be right. I remember talking to missionaries and my room mate in Romania differently because everyone was so different. And that's okay.

Comments: PART 3 (and I'm done...promise): Drew, I am very thankful that you give us the facts; I can't imagine why anyone who is following Christ would want to distort that. Isn't that what tons of other churches have done in the past? They change the context so that the congregation gets that warm-fuzzy feeling every Sunday, but that is not the truth. I am personally interested in the facts and I want my family to be subjected to those facts; the world is ugly, as it was in biblical days, and the reason it's ugly is because of sin...we aren't just talking about how to lead a good life here, we are talking about Eternity...I want to make sure my family’s eternity is in the company of Jesus Christ.

Comments: PART 2: I think that when it comes to life and the rules, why should we sensor ourselves. I mean Drew's not going to stand up there and gossip about the facts of life, which many of the 4th grade and older crowd do at school, on the bus, on the playground, with their friends...Kids are growing up WAY faster these days than we did, and they know more than we as parents would like to admit that they do. Since we can't be around 24/7 to shield them from the peer-influenced "facts of life" why would we try to shield them from the moral and religious values that are so desperately needed to deal with those "facts of life”? They are given that knowledge all on their own, from peers, why should we as parents want to shelter them from the proper decision making skills and consequences of making poor choices...Like Lisa said in her post, it is our job as parents to reiterate that the message presented was taken in context and make sure that our children took from it the godly lesson that was intended.

Comments: Okay, I have several responses to the Blog on Monday March 16...I tried to post one large one, but I think it kicked out due to size, so I'm breaking it up into several posts...here goes: One thing that I have a problem with is we, as a culture, relate Christmas to Santa & Jesus; Easter to the Easter Bunny and Jesus; when you lose a tooth the tooth fairy takes it, when you lose a friend/relative (dying) they are buried, but then live with Jesus/God. Eventually our kids realize that the Easter bunny isn't real, that Santa isn't real and that your teeth are really in a very little envelope in the China cabinet (personal experience, don’t ask), so how can we expect our children to believe us when it comes to Jesus? I think that kids need to know at a fairly young age that Easter is ALL about Jesus and his sacrifice for us; and that Christmas is ALL about Jesus and the gift that God gave us...like Drew said Wednesday night (the 1st week of Genesis), if Moses had not given us a background as to the historical nature of our beginning the book would have been questioned, he would have become unreliable, how do we not expect to become that to our children if we tell them "I've told you both of these things for years, but now I want you to trust me when I say, one is real and one is not..."

Comments: Drew, I sincerely appreciate your concern for the children of our congregation. As a parent, I feel it is my job to make sure they understand and learn the Godly lesson in your sermons. That said, I pray that you always continue to preach in the real life, real practice fashion we respect and appreciate.
