Carlee and I were good friends on board the zippin z. We started in the deck devision.I became cook and he went below as a
machinist mate.We always stayed frends and I would go down to Thelmouth,Mass. on the days off to stay at his house.I was the
guy that nick named him (jr flip).One day he came to the gally to work KP for me. While cutting salads for me he got to flipping
a big knife around.By the time I seen what he was doing,to late ,he cut his own arm. I folded his arm at the elbow and marched
him down to the medic.I married a girl from Boston. When I went back for visit , I made a trip down to see him. His friends
in Cape Cod were my friends. When I found the ships log, Carlee called me on the phone right a way. To know he was there and
you can call him, is one thing ,to know he is gone, that's another. We have lost another good friend. |

My grandfather, William Wesley Brown, served in the engine room of the USS Zellars during WWII. I don't have exact dates on
his service but I do know that he was aboard the ship during the war as well as it's time in Brazil. He passed away this Sunday,
November 8th from asbestos in his lungs partly due to his service on the Zellars.
If anyone knows of a good source for information about those who served on the Zellars, I would greatly appreciate it. I want
to learn more so that I may properly honor him and his service to this country. Thanks! |

Just saw the posting on Howard Blessitt. Howard and I talked the day before we left for Nashville - ha asked to be remembered
to everyone. Was hoping to make to Colorado Springs next year. The Association owes a deep debt to Hiward and Dot for all
the good hard work they did for us. The many reunions they hosted and the tireless work he put in on trying to cement the
ties between Grantville and the Zellars. Our Chaplain has sent a card and our condolences to Dot and the family.
He truly was a great shipmate and dedicated to our Association. |
