Nashville reunion was a success! 103 Attendees, 109 Banquet. Great a Show at "Grand Ole Opry", Country Music Hall of Fame,
Studio B tour, and a GREAT Hospitality room where old and new friendships were made and renewed.
Memorial Service was held in the Chapel on the grounds of the Hermitage which was most impressive. Nancy and I were honored
to host this year and thank all of my shipmates, family and friends who were able to attend. |

Kamikaze plane.

Dear Shipmates:
It is with sad regrets that I inform you of a dear friend who I lost (we all lost) His name was Lawrence (Larry) Morris from
Danville, KY, passed away on February 18th in Lexington, KY. As most of you can remember, I located Larry thru the book "The
Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailor". Larry survived the sinking of the USS Hoel at the battle of Leyte Gulf where he rec'd.
the Purple Heart (also, Capt. Kentburger survived ,later to go to the USS Zellars. Larry finished the War and came home &
worked for the Federal Government for 30 yrs.
I invited Larry to the reunion in Covington, KY. He came and also gave a speech. it's men like that you have to admire -
Larry and I became good friends. He will really be missed by his Family. (Larry was 90 yrs. of age) |

Russ stayed in the Nay and worked his way up to become a full LT. Commander at retirement. He was a great friend and shipmate

Attention Members!
The Association is assisting an effort to fund a plaque commemorating the USS Zellars placed on the Plaque Wall at the US
Navy Memorial Heritage Center in Washington, D C.
Art Barnes and Paul Gowan got the ball rolling by contributing $500 and providing the art work for the plaque. At our Annual
Meeting in Omaha, the Board and members in attendance affirmed the worthiness of this effort and the Association contributed
$250 toward the $3,000 total cost. They also wanted us to notify you that the success of this endeavor greatly depends on
your individual contributions. Any amount will be accepted and all are deductible. The Association will be notified and track
contributions toward the goal. Current donations total a little over $1,100. We will post our progress on this website. You
can also call Kathy or Marc at 877-241-7741 for more information.
You can see the plaque and find details about the Plaque Wall program by visiting the center’s website at www.navymemorial.org.

i was aboard the zellars 1953 station down the forward engine room on the throttle board on a med cruise when i got emergency
back bell i did everthing iknew to back down the ship as quick as i could while backing down i sent the messenger on watch
to go top side to see what was going on he came back dowen and said he could have shaken hands with the guys on the air craft
carrier that crossed our bow.isaved the ship and got nothing for it and saved 200 lives can you help me get some kind of medal |

I am the granddaughter of USS Zellars WWII veteran, Pete Scott. He was onboard The Zellars when she was hit by kamikaze in
Okinawa (sorry I don't know navy jargon well enough to tell you exactly what he did). I do know he switched places with a
man just before the attack. That man was killed. Anyway thank all for your service |

Isaw a name that brought back many memeries. George Roberts GM1. I did shore patrol with him on a med cruise in 56. One
of the nicest guys I ever had the pleasure of knowing. Can you just see it a skinny kid and big George but he watched over
me and made sure no one picked on me. |

My older brother, Frank Evans served aboard the Zellars. He brought home 'harrowing' tales of life aboard a'tin-can'. He's
passed on now..wish he was still here to amaze my grandsons with his 'old salts tales' He entered Navy approx 1945. Great
Lakes. Then on Zellars for a 'minority cruise'. Anybody remember Frankie Evans? |

finally back on my two feet after having my left knee replaced. the doctor told me 6 months to full heal but I sure won't
do it again. Am looking forward to Nashville in 2915 as I haven't been to a reunion since Alanta. I have my certificate as
a bluenose when we crossed the Artic circle in our northern atlantic cruise in 1956 for a goodwill tour. Don't know we ever
had blue noses though. |

On board from September, 1962 to April 1963 out of Mayport, Florida.
First time at sea was the Cuban blockade. We got to chase a Russian sub.
I watched two crewmen toss three grenades into the ocean on the sub and thought I was witnessing the start of World War 3.
Later the fellows told me the three grenades were the code for
asking a sub to come up. It did not surface.
When we returned to Mayport, it had been
turned into a Marine base. Lots of marching and assaults on the beaches.
But the most dangerous duty on Zellars
was the night ops with the carrier Enterprise and the new pilots out of
Pensacola practicing night carrier landings.
I remember the senior guys took the night duty because they wanted to be
awake if anything happened.
And it almost happened. One night an
Ensign made an error in a turn which put
Zellars in the path of the carrier. The
night was pitch black, but the starboard
watch said that carrier got very big.
The radarman tracking Enterprise froze
and quit giving "range to the guide" readings to the bridge.
Fortunately, we had a great veteran skipper and he came out of the bridge cabin and got us out of the way.
After the smoke cleared, they said we
were within 37 seconds of a collision.
I can not repeat what the skipper said
to the ensign, but it was colorful.
Tho I was on Zellars for a short time,
I will never forget the experience and
am thankful to have served with a great
crew.

Word received that DOT LINDBLOM (wife Of Charlie 10/46-7/47) passed away in January 2014. They attended the last 17 Reunions
and she always donated many hand-made items for our raffles. A quieter, kindlier person you could never meet, and she will
