Comments: I made a posting in October of 2012 about my ancestor Flavius Bender who was captured and taken to the Richmond Prison. What I failed to say was that he died as a prisoner and I didn't tell you that he had a brother that served with him in the 77th PA. who died before the Battle of Chicamauga and who was tended to by Flavius who stayed with him until he died in a Field Hospital. Flavius then rejoined his regiment and was captured at Chicamauga. The letters I mentioned in the earlier posting was written by Flavius and sent to a newspaper ran by the church that he belonged. They were then published in the church newspaper which apparently had a broad distribution. I was able to obtain copies of Flavius's letters from Bowling Green University.

Comments: Greetings -- GREAT that there is a unit keeping the spirit alive! Back in January 2012, I contacted the mayor of Chambersburg, and told him the town should give special recognition to the ultimate sacrifice made by Lt. Col. Housum in the way of a named street, or landmark -- in researching my own GGF's "Independent Battery B" (orig. attached to the 77th) the name Peter B Housum kept coming to the surface, and I thought the idea was a 'slam dunk' -- this being the 150th, and all -- and I had the full support of the mayor's head of economic development, who helped flesh out the story a bit more, but alas, 6-mos later the mayor and town council shot down the initiative, because they didn't feel it was appropriate to recognize one individual above all others of the area who had fought in that war, and that the town *already* has a fountain at the center square dedicated to the veterans of ALL wars… (Really?! you couldn't name a street after a guy that was instrumental in recruiting a regiment, AND who was motally wounded in battle?!). January 1st of this year came and went, and to my knowledge, there was NO observation of the 150th anniversary of the commander's death. WAY to honor your vets, Chambersburg! :( So, yeah, if the hometown won't do it, GOOD THING there are guys like you who will !!! Thank you, and carry on.
