Comments: I wanted to give kudos to a friend who did something nice for a stranger today. Kate, who has had more than her share of tough moments this past year, decided to help out a stranger at the grocery today. Random acts of kindness not only brighten someone's day, they actually brighten yours, as well! Here's her story... "It doesn't take much to make someone smile. While I was at the grocery store today, I was parking my car and saw an elderly man leaving the store. I stopped so that he could go through the crosswalk, and head to his car in the parking lot. I drove down a few more aisles, and eventually pulled into a spot. When I got out of my car, I saw that this elderly man was still making his way across the parking lot to his car. I stopped and waited for him to reach his car. I then approached him and said, "I have a deal for you.... how about I help you put those grocery bags in the trunk of your car, and then I'll take your grocery cart and use it when I go in the store!" You would have thought I had offered this dear gentleman the world... his eyes lit up, he smiled, and then he said, "I can't turn down an offer like that!" So I helped get all the bags in his trunk, and then made sure he didn't forget his cane, and wished him a wonderful rest of the day. He was so kind and couldn't have been more thankful. One small act of kindness.... Pay it forward.... I know I made someone's day better.... 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜" Way to go, Kate!!

Comments: I met Billy today while flying Delta back to school from Atlanta to Fort Lauderdale. He noticed I had a Pi Kappa Phi t-shirt on and introduced himself as I was boarding the plane as he slipped me a small envelope. Not knowing what it was I assumed it was a business card and so I went to my seat and opened it with which a very catchy quote was provided along with a starbucks gift card. I wanted to go back and speak to my fellow pikapp brother and thank him for his kind gesture, but it's kind of hard on a plane. Luckily I ran into him again at the baggage claim and he told me his story about the Bump Experiment. I was amazed and my eyes were opened to a life that I wish and hope to live one day. I have told everyone about this mans small gesture and am still amazed by this small, yet large experience.

Comments: HI Billy - Just wanted to say it was a pleasure meeting you in the check out line at Kroger last week. What a refreshing end to my evening by meeting another person who believes it only takes little steps - which I now will refer to as bumps. :-) You made me think about the "little old man" that used to come into my work. We adopted each other and up until the day he passed I would take him to lunch or give him rides or buy him groceries. After meeting you, and lamenting my current financial struggles, my mind starting racing about other ways to "bump" people but I will send you a separate email on that subject. For now, I wanted to share the link below for a friend's father who recently had to have emergency surgery and hope that there are some bumpers out there willing to help. Thank you for your time and your vision. https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/9ws6/musician-jim-boling-party-on-the-moon-medical-expense-fund

Comments: People on this day and time seem to have to qualify a person's need in order to try and help that person. They make to many personable judgements about things that should not be of concern to them. My next door neighbor has a seasonal job and in his offseason unemployment I offer food, money, and even some electricity to help when can not pay his utililty bill on time. These things I do because I would want someone to do that for me if need be. My lady friend says that she commends me for having a good heart but sometimes it looks like people are taking your kindness for your weakness and I reply, "You can not lose too much from helping another."

Comments: I met you today at the airport. You gave me a magnet and a bracelet. We talked for a few more minutes, and then you pulled out your wallet and treated me to lunch. Which was so kind, and unexpected and unnecessary. Part of what I love about my job is talking to people! Especially the nice ones! (A few weeks ago I asked a man where he was headed and he informed me that he was just looking, and really didn't feel like talking). Awesome. Thanks. Just being friendly, and doing my job. I put my bracelet on shortly after you left, and when my sales associate came in to work I offered to buy him a coffee or tea. Just a small way of giving it back. Didn't think much of it. Well....I am newly single, after a six year relationship that I ended. And I've been talking with the quintessential rebound. Which I am OK with. But today out of no where he made plans with me, which I stupidly got excited about. And then hours later canceled. And I was....annoyed. and mad. At him and at me. I came home to a thunderstorm, poured some wine, lit some candles and tried to get lost in a novel. But my mind and my frustration wouldn't let it go. On the verge of tears over a stupid rebound boy who I know should mean nothing but I just want so badly to. ...have fun with I looked down. And I stared at my bracelet. And I rubbed the lettering. And while I am still mad and still want to cry because "boys" suck I am reminded of our talk. And while I will let myself be annoyed and disappointed I will not allow myself to be consumed. Another glass of wine, a delicious dinner and before I know it tomorrow will be a new day. A day within which I won't allow a "boy" to get my hopes up. A day that I will spend focusing on positive energy and people. So, thank you. Not for the $20. But for the reminder and reality check. I hope my bracelet withstands time because I don't plan on taking it off. Please come say hi next time you are flying through!

Comments: Hey Billy. I wanted you to know that while 11Alive is getting credit for today being "Random Acts of Kindness Day" in Georgia, I truly believe it's because of YOUR Bump Experiment that they adopted this great way of life. You laid a lot of ground work a few years ago - and it's nice to see that others have jumped on board and raised it to another level. (Although, I think a real Random Act of Kindness doesn't require that you do something nice for someone else because I did something nice for you.) Have a great day. I bet Mr. Bump is smiling in Heaven!!

Comments: I love this idea. My husband has just retired from 20 yrs on the Navy and giving selflessly of himself for his country, but we have always made time to volunteer. But more than that, I frequently will pay for the order of whomever might be in the car behind me at a drive through (I have done that several times for police officers, and one even pulled me over to try and give the $ back to me). After all these years of giving anonymously to others, we have now found ourselves in a scary place, my car was repossesed last night and now WE have to come up with $2500 to get it back. I do not panic, though I do not have the resources to get it back. I will still continue to give to those that I see are in need but most especially if I can do it and they not know about it.

Comments: One of the great perks of my former job with the UNC Department of Athletics many years ago was receiving ACC Tournament tickets. I was fortunate to receive these free for eight years until the demand for Rams Club members became so much, the AD stopped giving them to the staff. However, while I was getting them, I often found it difficult to find someone that could go with me to the Tournament (hard to believe, right?) In fact, it almost became much more fun to go alone...I would approach the entrance to the coliseum and the first child that would ask me if I had a ticket, I would say, "Yes" - as they would reach for their wallet to pay whatever price I could have named, I would tell them that the ticket was free if it was okay with their parent that they come into the game because the ticket was free to me. The look on these youngsters faces (usually young boys) was one of total amazement that they could go to the Tournament for free. Usually the parent would secure their own ticket and we would connect at halftime to be sure all was okay. I had some neat conversations with these young people and I only asked that at some point in their life, they do something nice for someone just because they had the chance to do it and not because they would get anything back for it. It was so much fun being a "Bumper"...

Comments: I'll chime in for southeast MO. A person was traveling 50 miles by van each way to get to work, the expense of traveling was keeping them from relocating, they couldn't afford to move and still pay expenses of getting back and forth to work. This person was in a BAD situation where they were living. 2 other coworkers and Myself got the other person set up with an apartment, paid her up front costs to get in, rent, deposit, etc. and moved her things for her, once she was moved we got her set up with a ride to work too. She now has her own place with a 10 minute commute and a ride to work that doesn't cost her an arm and a leg. PS. I'll be sending others here to check out the Bump experiment.

There are tose who talk and those who walk their talk, but you should be especially blessed for inspiring us talkers to stand up and step forward. Illness limits my world, but I will contact our local weekly paper and see if I can get an article about your experiment printed. I will also mention it to a friend who is the librarian at our middle school (she is also a walker). Keep up the good work.

Comments: My church started this list called the Season Of Serving list. Anyone who has a need or knows of someone who has a need - be it in the church or community, puts their name on the list along with that need. Then the list is given out to the Bible study groups in the church and the groups go through the list and carry out any acts of service they choose. The list is updated each week. Bumping or Blessing someone feels so good. Not good in a selfish way but instead, a warming knowledge that someone else is now in a better place in their life. I love it!

Comments: I'd like to think I do random small gestures for people fairly regularly, but this particular day was something that really made me think-"I just bumped somebody". I was standing outside of a cell phone store waiting on a coworker when I saw a lady trying to get a box on a dolly-thingy and take into a store. She had it on the dolly, but it was too heavy to lean over to pull. I went a few stores down and helped her and then made sure the door was opened for her. In many of those cases I wonder if I'm being helpful, nosey(like when you overhear a question and you know the answer), or bringing attention to someone who has it under control, but in this case helpful. Turns out I was glad my coworker was taking way too long in the store when I was hungry and waiting!

Comments: Phew! What a day!Well to start off as I was going to work this morning traffis was a breeze, instead of having the person in front of me fight his their way in I slowed down and waved them on, much better than hand signals and curse words. When I arrived at work I went into the dining and there was Mr. Harvey cussing up a storm. So I went over to him and sat down with him to see what was going on. He told me that the kitchen had no bananas for three days. Without bananas he has cramps he says. So I went to my office grabbed my purse and off I went to buy a bunch of bananas. I thought to myself "wow, I am bumping it up!" Well about a half hour later after the whole nana drama, I walked down the hall turning the door alarms off as usual. My jaw dropped. There was a laundry basket outside of every residents door. (the girl who normally does laundry is out due to a death in the family)First thought, if this were my mom or dad and they needed their laundry done I would naturally want someone to do it. Second thought of course, what if I had a tour come in the building that would not be good to see all of this. So ....Off I went Got the laundry cart and I did laundry for eleven hours today! All I could think about was "Bump it up!" It is so easy to do something for someone whether its bananas or laundry it is that simple. I can not wait until tomorrow to bump it up even more. Being nice is so much better than getting frustrated.

Comments: First of all, this is such a great thing that you are doing! I can't wait to see how it is received nation-wide. I work as a substitute teacher, and a few weeks ago, one of my students did not have lunch money. He had already "charged" his lunch 3 days in a row, and the cafeteria would not let him get a full meal because he had no money. When it was time to go to lunch he said, "Ms. Dunn, I don't want to go to the cafeteria because they aren't going to let me eat." So, I told him that I would take care of it. I paid for him to get some lunch that day, and made sure that he had money to eat for the rest of the week. Although it was only less than $5 for a couple of lunches, the child was really appreciative, and I know that it made a difference in his life, if only for a few days. Whenever I am subbing at that school now, I always ask that child if he has money to eat. I've kind of "adopted" him as one of the students that I check up on every so often.

I was at the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament this past weekend and I "bumped" someone at the game. She was a little older then me and was trying to walk down the stairs to her seat and she was trying to carry too much stuff. Her drink bottle fell out of her hands and rolled down the steps. I jumped up and asked if I could help her and she was so surprised. After escorting her to her seat, I asked if I could share something with her, and I told her about my daddy and TBE. I hope she has bumped someone else since then. It felt so-o-o good to do that one little act. I hope everyone will keep it up and Bump someone every day--many times a day.

Comments: Today is march 7th and today I learned of this website. I read the "Bump it up" article about Harold Bumpas Humphrey in the farmville reflector and was amazed at Uncle Bump's kindness (yes he is my uncle, my grandfathers brother). Not amazed in the same sense as watching fire works on the fourth, or sitting at the beach watchin the waves, but that his kindness has become a movement. Growing up around uncle bump, he always taught me what it is to be a true southern gentleman. In 21 years i never saw him raise his voice or his hand to anyone, but i always saw his warm smile and knew that he was the kindest, most caring, most gentle man on the face of God's green earth. One can only hope that one day everyone on earth can "Bump it up"!!!

Comments: Tonight I got bumped! As hectic as my life is, I ran into Food Lion earlier tonight to grab some groceries and accidently left my "MVP" card in the car. When the cashier would not look it up for me, the lady behind me offered hers. She saved me a few bucks just by doing something that cost her nothing. Now, $2.53 is not a huge amount of money- but I immediately thought to myself how good it felt to be on the receiving end of someone's kindness- and that's what the bump experiment is all about! Bump was my grandad and the best person I have ever known. Thank you to all who have gotten on board with this movement- and a special thanks to Billy for his dedication, passion, and kind heart. Let's Bump It Up and push on toward November of 2009!!

I somehow remembered he had done that and simply put his clothes in the dryer for him. The cost was NOTHING! The pay off was a huge thank you and smile on his face. He is aware of the experiment and I let him know that I had just "bumped" him. This is great, and can be done on any level. Something as simple as this small story made a difference for him! Imagine all of the possibilities if just this small gesture makes such a large difference....

Comments: I love the concept of the "bump". My Grandma took in children that needed a home and sheltered them as long as they liked. This was long before foster homes or social service checks. She just fed them and loved them and made them better people. When my Dad died several people "bumped" us. Those wonderful anonymous people and family members who gave of their time and money to help us out. When school started, school clothes were made available. Teachers and the principal watched out for me and made sure I was taken care of. A local church, after hearing about the loss of my Dad and his income, donated money to me to help with my first semester in college. These little things were huge to us. Not just because our needs were somehow filled. But because they gave us hope and showed us that we were not alone. And I have been trying since then to "bump" others to repay the love and kindness shown to my Mom and I. So thank you Billy for the inspiration!

She began to leave the checkout line to collect extra change. I simply reached in my wallet and pulled out the change. The first reaction was confusion and unbelief, but resulted in smiles for the one in need the checkout person, and me. It was a small price to pay for a brighter moment in the day. Instead of letting impatience affect my disposition, I chose BUMPing it up for a more pleasant outcome!

Comments: I had moved here from Illinois and after a few years decided it best to leave my husband and live alone but not return to Illinois. My only friends were those at work and they were very supportive. I had seen a beautiful silver butterly bracelet that I felt symbolized my change. I loved butterflies because I felt they portrayed growth and change. But I knew that I needed more practical things than a bracelet. One of my friends urged me to buy the bracelet but I told him no, I needed other things before spending money on that even tho I wanted it so very much. Then around Christmas I got a gift certificate and I told my friend that I could use that to finally get the butterflies and I was so happy! During a break that day, a secretary brought a small box that said To Karen From Santa. And inside, of course, was that beautiful butterfly bracelet. I cried so hard and couldn't catch my breath, the poor secretary thought she had done something wrong. But I was so touched that someone would do someone as sweet as that. Because I knew who Santa was. It was not my soon to be ex-husband or a new boy-friend but my dear friend at work that had watched me struggling. I don't take my bracelet off and it has been two years now. I am still changing and I hope it is still for the good. Thank you for the site. I hope I can BUMP someone today.
